Perth's Central Business District was established on the northern bank of the beautiful Swan River and this influenced the city's development over the following decades.
The northern suburbs are therefore closer to the State's longest established civic buildings, hospitals and institutions and the city's older suburbs tend to be located in this region.
Apart from being on the same side of the river as the CBD, Parliament House, the University of Western Australia, King's Park and an outstanding range of world-class public facilities, most suburbs are within a twenty-minute drive of one of the glorious beaches which form the region's western boundary.
